Under 21 success

The Salthill Knocknacarra Under 21 footballers overcame Killanin in the West Board Semi Final last Sunday. Salthill started brightly with a fine point from Damien McDonagh. It was point for point in the opening few minutes until brothers Kevin and Brian Conlon combined to set up Brian Fahy for Salthill’s goal. It was a well worked move and gave the homeside the lead. Salthill Knocknacarra lead by a point a half time 1-2 to 0-4
The seasiders had a number of goal chances in the opening stages of the second half. Gearóid Aemstrong came on for Damien McDonagh early on in the half and made an immediate impression. His presence was noted by the visitors.  Michael O’Donnell and Ronan Conlon added scores for Salthill. Killanin did manage to level the game midway through but the sky blues continued to add points through Armstrong, Sean Gavin, Eoin O Mahoney and Jack Larkin.  It was a great team effort and well deserved win. They will now take on either An Spidéal or Oughterard in the West Board final.
Good performances from Gearóid Canavan and Michael O’Donnell in defence, Brian Conlon upfront, with Gearóid Armstrong and Jack Larkin playing well when introduced.

Salthill Knocknacarra 4-10

St Michaels 0-07

Salthill Knocknacarra's U21's overcome close rivals, St Michaels, in the first round of the West Board U21 championship last Sunday in the Prairie.  An early goal from Gearóid Armstrong gave the homeside the ideal start. Michaels added a point of their own before Kevin Conlon made a good run up the pitch to reply. Both sides swapped scores throughout the half before Enda Dunne broke free to grab his sides second goal, leaving Salthill Knocknacarra ahead at half time 2-3 to 0-4

The sea siders continued with intent in the second half with Cian McBrien getting his name on the score sheet. Brian Conlon replaced Ronan Conlon and it wasn't long before he scored his side's third goal. With Michaels facing an uphill battle, this Salthill side continued to work hard. Eoin O'Mahoney, Armstrong, Conlon and Dunne pointed with Dunne also scoring his second goal of the game late on in the match.

It was a good performane from a young Salthill team. Well done to their management team of Tadhg Begley, Gerry Hughes and Mike Flaherty. Good performances by Conor Halloran and Gearóid Canavan in defence, Sean Gavin in midfield and Enda Dunne upfront, who finished with a tally of 2-1

Salthill/Knocknacarra v Oughterard U21 Championship 7-2-09

Our U21 side disappointingly exited this year’s championship at the very first hurdle as they went down by 10 points to 9 to a determined Oughterard side.  Salthill/Knocknacarra started the brighter of the two sides with Conor Halloran winning some good early possession in midfield.  We took an early two point lead through Eoin O’Mahony from a free and a fantastic long range effort from play.  Eoin was working very hard to win possession along with Sean Gavin as our forwards began to get on top.  A Conor Healy free either side of two Oughterard frees had us leading by three points to two before some more battling play in midfield from Conor Halloran who fed Ronan Conlon who was fouled on the run and Eoin O’ Mahony scored his second free.  Oughterard replied with a free of their own before Conor Healy caught a superb ball after moving out to midfield.  He fed Enda Dunne who was fouled and Conor converted the free himself for his second point of the game.  Just as half time was approaching a fantastic move by Salthill ended with a good run by Eoin O’Mahony and his pass found wing back Ray Winters who finished the move with a fantastic point to leave us six point to three up at half time and looking comfortable.  Indeed, perhaps our lead should have been more; such was our domination in the first half.

Oughterard pegged the lead back early in the second half to just one with two early scores as Joe Joe Greaney and Damien Reilly came more into the game.  Another point from Eoin O’Mahony was equalled by an Oughterard free before Conor Healy (free) and Eoin O’Mahony from play restored our three point lead at nine points to six and we looked good for the win with just ten minutes to go.  However, unfortunately we could not manage to hold and conceded four poor scores in the last ten minutes.  It was a disappointing finish for the side that has trained hard for a number of months and had promised so much in the build up to the game.  Best for the club on the day were Kevin Conlon and Michael Raftery in defence, Conor Halloran in midfield and Eoin O’Mahony and Seán Gavin up front. Scorers: Eoin O’Mahony 0-5 (3f), Conor Healy 0-3(3f), Ray Winters 0-1.

Salthill/Knocknacarra Team:

Cormac Connolly, Michael Raftery, Kevin Conlon, Owen Burke, Cian McGinn, Stephen O’Reilly, Ray Winters, David Fitzpatrick, Conor Halloran, Ronan Conlon, Aonghus Hanley, Eoin O Mahony, Enda Dunne, Conor Healy, Seán Gavin. Subs: Mark Jordan (R Conlon), Enda Gavin (C McGinn), Conor O Loughlin (M Raftery).

The club would like to wish a speedy recovery to Ronan Conlon, Cian McGinn and Niall O’Grady who suffered injuries this afternoon.
